According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the virus is only spread from one person to the other person through contact. WHO has reported no case or evidence of cats or dogs becoming ill with this covid-19. Likewise, in the US, no case has been reported. Hence quarantining the animals is taken as additional measures.

How do you protect your pets if you are infected?

As they always say, prevention is better than cure. Protecting our pets can be a very noble thing to do to them. In case the pandemic hits them, it can only be more than harmful to their lives. Animals’ care bodies, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has given out measures that can help a lot in protecting these pets from any possible threats of the pandemic. They are as follows;

• Self -Isolating
If you have the coronavirus, whether it is confirmed or suspected, try to restrict yourself from contacting other animals and more the pets. Isolate yourself just as you would have done with the people. Although there are no reported cases on pets and others getting this virus, it is always advisable that if a person is sick, they should limit themselves from animals. This will be a considerable measure towards protecting people and animals as well.

Stocking Supplies for Pets
For the next few days, weeks, or months, there is the uncertainty of how the situation will be, with a possible total lockdown of some nations. Storing up food for pets will be okay. This will help along way incase things gets worse. The kitty should at least have a thirty-day supply and medications.

Designating a Care Giver
If possible, try to get another person to take care of your animals when you are in quarantine. Avoid snuggling, sharing food, petting, among others. This person can be a neighbour, a friend, or a family member.

Washing Hands
If you must be around the pets, ensure you wash your hands with soap before and soon after you finish attending to them. Do this also after getting into contact with the food suppliers and after giving them food. This is because they might be carrying the virus through their fur.

Keeping the Pet Entertained

For cats
Try to keep the pets entertained. This way, there will be a few hours of direct contact with you. For instance, you can give them some of your empty packages from Amazon. You can also get them a DIY food puzzle which is done by you dropping a cat treat in a juice with the cup, then empty the candle votive or even other vessels that cannot break easily which is too deep or awkward in a way that it won’t fit the pet’s face. They let them figure out how to get the food.

For Dogs
If you have a bored and a pup that is lacking affection, try the DIY scavenger hunt. You can hide the treats in a room, yard, and house then let them look for them. Also, you can get PB in a cup or even have the remains of an empty peanuts butter in the container. Else, you can do hollowed-out dog bone having peanut butter on it, then freezing it for the makeshift Kong joy.

It is worth noting that pets and animals, in general, are essential and are part of our lives. In such a time, the world is facing this Corona pandemic; pets should be well taken care of. This will help the medics and governments in curbing this pandemic of Covid-19.
