Life on an antique ship is alternating, there is always something to do. Fortunately, I can decide for myself what I do and when. For me it is a life in the rhythm of the seasons, as well as per day. Every day I look at the weather and come up with chores. Last spring, the weather was great for sanding, picking and painting. We are located in a spot outside the city and there we also have the space to do. The paintwork is now largely done so the other chores will be discussed.
I like to do a lot myself. Sometimes things are really challenging, other things become habit over the years.
Like making a cover for the steering wheel. I have done that twice before. The first time I had a whole roll of cheesecloth. I sewed a cover for the mainsail and a steering wheel cover. To get the cheesecloth waterproof it had to be smeared with cloth cloth cloth. A wax based thing to dilute with turpentine. At that time we were in Edam. The house was 10 meters long and therefore took up a large piece of quay. I think I had to smear three times before it was waterproof.. . And every time it smelled like wax and turpentine in Edam... The stuff is hardly used anymore and I understand that. The skins looked beautiful but after about 4 years were completely digested and rotted away.
The second cover for the steering wheel I made from an old sail. That was pretty sturdy and hard to sew. Unfortunately, it blown away.
