1. Architecture.

There is an obvious mixture of Dutch and Caribbean construction style in the city buildings. Colonial and colorful architecture, many of the buildings are UNESCO World Heritage Site, and there are only 6 Caribbean UNESCO sites.

2. The People (You di Korsow).

What is it about a yiudikorsow? Oh well, the list is vast, but here are my top three reasons why to love them!

But I have to say I'm still shocked about the vastness of stray garbage and dead/stray animals. I have now visited 7 different islands/countries on our sabbatical and nowhere I found it worse, even more so, everywhere it is much less a problem or so it seems... I really felt sad about it.

Dode dieren gaan bij een temperatuur van 30+graden nu eenmaal eerder tot ontbinding over en dan stinkt 1 dode hond, kat of geit met factor 100.
Wbt de zwerfdieren: die zijn er zeker, alleen is lang niet ieder loslopend dier 'baasloos':
Conform de wet ben je verplicht je hond op je prive-terrein te houden en mogen loslopende honden worden neergeschoten.
Dat lang niet iedereen zich aan de wet houdt, zorgt soms voor vervelende situaties: vooral in de buitengebieden kun je, als je je te voet op straat begeeft, maar beter een paar stenen in je hand hebben om andermans loslopende honden uit je buurt te houden (gooien is meestal niet nodig: ervaring is ook bij honden de beste leermeester)
Een van onze voedsel-leveranciers (informele economie=veel contant geld in huis) heeft 6 honden, maar geen omheining rond zijn terrein. Die beesten houden inbrekers op afstand, maar regelmatig gaan er een paar de straat op. Nu woont er sinds kort een Nederlandse mevrouw bij hem in de buurt. Die heeft zich dus over een paar van de 'zielige zwerfhonden' ontfermd.
Hij doet er niets tegen, want a. bewijs maar eens dat ze van hem waren, b. ze zijn op kosten van die mevrouw ingeent en eten tegenwoordig dure hondenbrokken van Albert Heijn. Alleen schijnen ze, volgens de geruchten, niet te kunnen wennen aan binnenshuis in een mand slapen, ipv op de overdekte porch.
Ook de kuddes geiten die je hier mss wel hebt zien rondlopen, hebben een eigenaar: wij doen hier niet aan oormerken (evenmin als aan hondenpenningen zoals in over-registrerend NL), maar ik raad je niet aan om een 'zielig geitje' mee te nemen naar je vakantie-appartement: je zit zo vast voor veediefstal:)

7. Our mini-markets, especially those with Chinese shop-owners: they are open till midnight or later.

As for '2': we are living here with far more then 10 nationalities: according to information from Kranshi it's 107!

Hi Soberana, that's a nice story about the bus! I'm always happy to hear these kind stories. About the nationalities, it was confirmed to me that indeed it is more than 55 nationalities at the moment. if you send me a link to the 107 figure and I will correct the post.
