The Netherlands is free for 75 years. The plans were ready to celebrate this on a large scale. World War II is behind us and we are grateful for that.
Unfortunately, at the beginning of this year - everyone knows - the coronavirus crossed our borders. Unsolicited, unwanted, but neutrality was pointless. It didn't last. Panic is a big word, but fear took away the sense of freedom.
We are now fighting a world war against a virus that lacks weapons. There is no vaccine yet, it is said, and therefore the official, legal recommendation is: keep your distance, do not trust your fellow human beings. At least, that's how you can explain it.
And so there's no party today. Does this mean everyone's going to be messing with them? I don't think so.
