Victoria and Emilia

#History

Victoria and Emilia are the Barcia Boniffatti sisters. Their parents were José Barcia Boente, a Spanish rubber entrepreneur and Elena Bonifatti, an Argentinean national. They were born in Peru, in the city of Iquitos.

The sisters specialized in Early Childhood Education in Europe. Upon returning to their hometown of Iquitos, the Barcia Boniffatti sisters decided to apply the knowledge they had acquired and on June 13, 1921, in Iquitos, they inaugurated the Kindergarten , a private educational institution for children from 2 to 7 years old. The success of the kindergarten was overwhelming, they started with 13 students and soon the place became too small for all the children that arrived.

The success of their initiative reached the ears of President Augusto B. Leguía. Leguía, who assigned them the task of organizing state kindergartens nationwide. The Barcia Boniffatti sisters accepted this task. They had to wait for the end of a dictatorship to continue their work.

With the motto "Everything by love, nothing by force", the sisters Emilia and Victoria Barcia Boniffatti inaugurated the first State Kindergarten on May 25, 1931. Kindergarten No. 1 was located in La Mar Park, today known as Parque de las Aguas.

I have been living in Peru for two years and I have learned about their story through the homework of my daughter who is in the early education stage.

We made a banner that says, May 25th, Day of Early Education. We drew a school with the Peruvian flag and a cake with a candle for the 90 years that are being celebrated today, and at the bottom we placed, Thank you Victoria and Emilia!
