Sometimes memories can suddenly flood you; be conjured up by a song, an image, a taste or a smell from the past.
Sometimes you also have to travel several hundred km further to be suddenly ambushed by such a memory from the past.

Just as has been the custom for a few years, we also traveled this year to the town of Oye Plage on the French cote d'opale. I used to go to the coast with my uncle a lot, so it turned out to be a bit 'trip down to memory lane' anyway since he died late last year. After all, in every graying man, I saw my uncle and remembered all kinds of adventures from my childhood.

When walking into the local coffee roaster, where my friend always stops for according to him, the most delicious expresso of the Low Countries, I smelled a hint of chicory. This immediately took me 35 years back in my grandmother's time and kitchen. I saw her life size in front of me again as she poured the coffee still old style with boiling water through a filter. She then urged me to stay meters away from her, since boiling water was dangerous.
However, this curious aunt and 'soon to be coffee lover' still stayed in the kitchen on the heating, which we were not allowed to sit on at all, because it could only fall down once. However, it was such a broad case, just under the window, that literally everyone sat on it. also adults. Even after her death, it was often said that we should NOT sit on it, to smile and think about grandma.

But in this way, I also saw how she threw an extra spoonful of chicory on top of the coffee, 'for the taste, 'she always said. That blue pot of Buisman was indispensable in my grandmother's kitchen and my mother also used it for a long time. I never bought or used it myself. However, overtaken by nostalgia and the memories of my grandma, I immediately bought 2 pots in that shop. to keep the memory alive. and “for the taste of grandma”.

What a lovely memory. And nice how a certain smell, music, object or something, just brings that one particular memory back up and brings you and you back in time.

Chicory . I also remember my grandmother scooping a soup spoon on the coffee. I never really knew why I thought it was for digestion for a long time. Because I found that it didn't change much about the taste. And people didn't drink it in the war as a substitute for coffee.? That wouldn't have been very good.
