Earlier I told you I photographed the Northern Lights in Iceland when I was there last January.

beach near the town of Vik, in the south of Iceland. 

You're here on a lava beach. Iceland is volcanic, and the lava flows into the sea. Logically... once in the sea, the lava breaks down, and like “ordinary” beach sand it gets smaller and smaller, until

 


It's a magical sight: a black beach, especially when there's snow on it, like when we were there.
