When you love coffee as much as I do, you will certainly have no trouble accumulating a huge amount of coffee grounds. We all know it can be composted, but you can do so much more than that. You can give those beautiful coffee beans a second lease on life, in so, so many ways. Some of these hacks, I knew about. But I also knew there were more of them to be found. I scoured the net, and picked out the easiest. Keep reading if you are as curious as I was... ;-)
Your garden loves coffee grounds...
- Hydrangeas love coffee grounds: I adore hydrangeas, especially blue ones. Their colour, however, depends on the acidity of the soil. Mixing coffee grounds into the soil underneath your hydrangeas will help them keep that gorgeous shade of blue.
- Snails, slug and other creepers do NOT like coffee ground: Sprinkle the ground with grounds (haha) and keep them at a safe distance from your beloved plants.
- Apparently, carrots and radishes love coffee grounds: You are supposed to mix them into the seeds before planting. They will keep pests away and increase your harvest as well.
- Worms like coffee grounds, and yes, that is a good thing. They don't look cute of lovable, but they are a blessing for a healthy, succesful garden. They are living, crawling little fertilizing machines. They are also very fond of coffee grounds, so adding some to the soil can only be helpful in attracting them.
- Your compost bin is not just a convenient way to dump excess coffee grounds. It actually does something useful there too: It will add nitrogen to the mixture, which is essential for good decomposition.
- In winter, you will love coffee grounds too: They will help keep sidewalks and driveways from being too slippery, and the acidity will help the ice to melt.
