Modern humans are thought to have originated in East Africa's rift valley area, and in addition to fossilized human bones, researchers have discovered Africa's earliest human habitation in Tanzania.
History of Tanzania
Bantu speaking peoples came from the west and north about the first millennium CE. Arab traders founded Kilwa approximately 800 CE, and Persians settled Pemba and Zanzibar. By 1200 CE, Swahili civilization had evolved from an Arab, Persian, and African blend.
Vasco da Gama sailed along the coast in 1498, and the Portuguese quickly controlled the area. On Zanzibar, the Omani Arab slave trade thrived in the early 1700s
A colony of German East Africa was founded by Carl Peters in 1891. In 1890, Britain declared Zanzibar a protectorate, citing its efforts to stop the slave trade.
After WWI, Tanganyika became a British mandate. Tanganyika's African National Union (TANU) formed in 1954 to challenge British control; it gained internal autonomy in 1958 and independence on December 9, 1961.
When a republic was declared on December 9, 1962, TANU leader Julius Nyerere became president. Nyerere established ujamma, an African form of socialist agriculture.
It gained independence on December 10, 1963, and joined Tanganyika on April 26, 1964, to become the United Republic of Tanzania.
It was designated by Nyerere's government to be the sole lawful political party in Tanzania. Nyerere left office in 1985, and the constitution was modified in 1992 to allow multi-party democracy.
