As many around here will know my passion for the history of the people of Israel, I have done many studies on this magical and historical place and today I wanted to share with you some of the history of the eight-door Wall.
Eight are the doors that open way to the old walled city of Jerusalem. Or should they, because one of them, the Golden Gate, remains sealed while waiting for the arrival of the Messiah.
The wall and gates of Jerusalem tell the story of this city while contributing to building its present as part of the day-to-day life of its inhabitants. Under these premises, knowing their peculiarities and meaning is essential before crossing them.
Jaffa Gate
Also called Puerta de la Torre de David because of its proximity to this citadel now converted into a museum, the Jaffa Gate is one of the busiest in serving as direct access to the Christian and Jewish neighborhoods. Located in the western part of the city, the road connecting Jerusalem to the port of Jaffa in the Mediterranean departed from it, making it the gateway for Jewish and Christian pilgrims coming from Europe.
Puerta de los Leones
It is named after the two lion bas-relieves that flank it, although it is also known as St. Stephen's Gate because, it is said, the saint was martyred not far from her. While the Golden Gate is closed, it is the only eastern access to the city.
Damascus Gate
The Damascus Gate is located on the north wall of the wall, pointing towards the capital of Syria. It is undoubtedly the most imposing of the eight gates of Jerusalem. In addition to its beauty, it is impressed by the hustle and bustle that surrounds it, as it serves as direct access to the lively souk of the Muslim quarter.
Zion Gate
Located on the southern wall, it is the last of the four main gates of Jerusalem's old city. Named after Mount Zion, which is directly opposite, it is known by the Arabs as David's Gate when it is believed that the tomb of the prophet is near. It gives access to the Armenian and Jewish neighborhoods.
Dung Gate
From Stowage, Garbage, or Waste. Its unfortunate name is due to the fact that it was originally the door that used to take the garbage out of the city. Although it does not stand out for its size or its beauty, it is very busy as it is the fastest way to reach the Western Wall and the Esplanade of Mosques.
Herod's Gate
The real name of this door in Arabic and Hebrew is Puerta de las Flores due to the rosette motifs that adorn it. It is located on the same wall as the Damascus Gate and gives access to the Muslim Quarter.
New Door
While all the aforementioned gates date back to the 16th century, the New Gate has the distinction of having been built in 1887 to facilitate access to pilgrims who came to the Christian Quarter. With the beginning of the Arab-Israeli War of 1948, the door was sealed and did not open again until 1967, when Israel occupied East Jerusalem.
Golden Gate
Also known as the Gate of Mercy or Eternal Life, this is undoubtedly the most interesting of the eight gates of Jerusalem. It is the only one that has been closed since Soliman the Magnificent ordered it sealed in 1541 to prevent access to the Messiah, which according to tradition must enter through it on Judgment Day. To make things even more difficult, there is a Muslim cemetery outside.
