Abandoned hospital ardennes
The abandoned hospital is impressive on top of the mountain. It is known as the Sanatorium du Basil and has a rich history. In the 19th century, there were numerous sanatoriums building for the treatment of TB in Europe. This disease was known as a barely treatable disease that often ended fatal. The initiative to build this sanatorium came in 1899 by Ernest Malvoz, Director of the Bacteriological Laboratory. A year later, construction of the building was started, and in 1903 the doors were opened and the first patients were accommodated. Clean air and rest often did the TB patients well and therefore the location of the Sanatorium du Basil was perfect. When one was able to treat TB patients better and better, the sanatorium became redundant. For several years, the building served as a hospital and refugees were accommodated between 2010 and 2013. Due to the skyrocketing energy bills, the property then closed its doors and the building became the target of vandalism. The property is still not demolished, in fact, the building is for sale. For a small amount of 1.5 million Euros, this property can be revived.

We left very early in the morning. It was a 2.5-hour drive and wanted to arrive in the morning. Once arrived at the address, there was nothing to see. Lots of trees around us so we decided to look for. We decided to go upward. We had to pay a little attention to a rest home that was there we were not allowed to be seen (nuja hindsight this didn't matter much). It was a steep slope. When we came out of the woods, the sick was right in front of our nose.
