Albinism

Albinism generally refers to oculocutaneous albinism, a group of inherited disorders in which there is little or no production of the pigment melanin. The type and amount of melanin your body produces determines the color of your skin, hair, and eyes. Melanin is also involved in the development of optic nerves, therefore, people with albinism have vision problems.

Signs of albinism are usually evident in the color of a person's skin, hair and eyes, but sometimes the differences are subtle. People with albinism are also sensitive to the effects of the sun, so they have a higher risk of getting skin cancer.

While there is no cure for albinism, people with albinism can take steps to protect their skin and eyes and maximize their eyesight.

Fur

The most identifiable form of albinism is white hair and very light-colored skin compared to that of siblings. Skin color (pigmentation) and hair color can vary from white to brown, and may be about the same as those of parents or siblings who do not have albinism.

Hair

Hair color can vary from very white to brown. People of African or Asian descent who have albinism may have yellow, reddish, or brown hair. Hair color may also darken in early adulthood or due to exposure to minerals normally found in water and the environment and will therefore appear darker with age.

Eye color

Eyelashes and eyebrows are often pale. Eye color can vary from very light blue to brown, and may change with age.

The lack of pigment in the colored part of the eyes (the iris) makes the iris a little translucent. This means that the iris cannot completely block light that can enter the eye. Because of this, very light-colored eyes may appear red depending on the light.
