Alcohol is a major cause of cancer
Alcohol after tobacco is the most important cause of cancer, but hardly anyone knows it
After smoking, drinking alcohol is the main preventable cause of cancer. But most Dutch people are not aware of this danger, according to research by the Trimbos Institute.
NRC writes: “According to KFW Cancer Control, alcohol causes one out of ten cancer cases in men and one in 33 among women. One out of seven Dutch women gets breast cancer; in 7 percent of the cases, alcohol is the cause. The fact that this awareness is difficult for Dutch people has to do with the positive associations that many Dutch people (almost half) have with alcohol, says Carmen Voogt, researcher at the Trimbos Alcohol Expertise Center.” Many people cling to studies that show that a glass of wine a day could slightly lower the risk of a cerebral infarction in some groups. Meanwhile, they ignore all studies that show how harmful alcohol is.
This is how it warns KWF that the risk of breast cancer increases by one and a half times if you drink five glasses or more. The risk of colon cancer, throat cancer, liver cancer, oral cancer, esophageal cancer and larynx cancer also increases with every glass.
Due to the harmfulness of alcohol, the Canadian health authorities have recently recommended drink a maximum of two glasses a week. It's best to ignore alcohol altogether, is the advice. Even according to the World Health Organization (WHO), there is no healthy dose of alcohol.
