AMA Style Essay Writing and Citation

AMA or American Medical Association is a style writing commonly used in the medical community when a student purses a degree in medicine or nursing, as well as other medical professions. AMA is slightly different than the MLA and APA styles.

When completing essays titles, headings and subheadings, follow this format:

• Title and Major Section should be centered or flush with a left hand margin. The heading should be in caps and in bold.
  

• A First Level Heading should be flush with a left hand margin and in full caps and in bold.
• The second level heading should be flush with a left hand margin and in caps, with bold.
• The third level heading should be indented and in caps, with bold. Keep in mind, the third level heading is a run-in or paragraph heading it is an essential sentence structure.
  

• Fonts - 10 or 12 point font. Any typeface can be used, however typically serif or times roman is used.
• Indents - One half inch.
• Right Justification - There is no specification for this. Check with the professor to ensure they do not have specific requirements they want followed.
• Spacing - Block paragraph spacing is used when completing the final of an essay or manuscript. Use single space with the abstract, notes, titles and headings. Quotes should be in clocks, as should tables, figures and references. Essentially, everything but the main text. There should be a double space between each single space block.
• Page Numbers – Page numbers begin on the title page and are numbered consecutively. There should be no changes to the numbering system throughout the text, even when it is lengthy or being used in the appendix.
• Emphasis - Should be in italics.
