#Amazone Tribe wins lawsuit against oil company and saves half a million acres of rainforest. The Amazon rainforest has millions of trees — so much it's often called the world's' lungs'.

Only the Amazon is responsible for absorbing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and producing oxygen in significant quantities. In addition, it is an entire ecosystem in itself that houses thousands of species, some of which have yet to be discovered. Cutting down even a small part of this rainforest can have catastrophic consequences for the planet. Recently, the Ecuadorian government planned to drill oil over an area of seven million hectares of rainforest. Their plan was to build 16 oil blocks for oil mining.

But they faced backlash, notably from the Waorani of Pastaza, an Amazon team that has lived in the area for hundreds of years. This is their home as they know it.

The tribe appealed to the Provincial Court, which recently decided to block the installation of the oil blocks indefinitely. In addition, the decision has also blocked the oil companies and the Ecuadorian government from drilling another half a million hectares.

Now the tribe can finally rest — but their fight isn't over. The tribe expects the government to appeal the decision because they still want the valuable oil under the country. #milieu
