The history of ornithology
Ornithology has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. The Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 BC).) is often seen as one of the first ornithologists because of his extensive observations and descriptions of various bird species. In the Middle Ages, birds remained a subject of interest, mainly because of their symbolic and religious significance.
Modern ornithology began to develop in the 18th and 19th centuries, when scientists such as Carl Linnaeus and John James Audubon developed systematic methods for classifying and studying birds. Linnaeus introduced the binomial nomenclature system, which is still used to name birds and other organisms. Audubon, an American naturalist and painter, is known for his monumental work “The Birds of America,” in which he captured hundreds of bird species in their natural habitats.
