Chapter 16

All night, well, only the periods I'm awake, I hear the rain chattering against the windows. What falls now will not fall tomorrow, I think, but that is a saying that is not always true. It's morning and the plenary is full. I have to go through it, too, that is part of the pilgrimage. I only brought a short raincoat and rainpants, and it's 20 km to Granda de Salime today. The first part goes through a forest to a large extent and there it is one big mud pool because of the rain but there is an alternative, walking along the road. Walking fourteen kilometers on asphalt is no fun, certainly not for my feet who prefer to walk unpaved but only mud it is not real either. Choose from two annoying things. I choose to suck over the asphalt. It's bar cold and it keeps raining. It should be a beautiful view on the way, but I see nothing but grey and foggy due to the rain. I count the signs on the way. Every 100 meters one and after 10 signs the km sign. I must have something to do. Finally after one hundred and forty, 100 meter signs I see the dam and at that moment more important, the restaurant that is just across the street. Here warm me up a little and rest for an hour. It even becomes dry, and the sun begins to gently break through the cloud deck. Nice behind glass with a spectacular view of the immense reservoir.

With wet shoes and socks I walk a bit to the end of today. In the alberque it smells like wet clothes but after a while I don't smell that either, I get used to it.
