Anxiety is an emotion that everyone has experienced at some point and that helps the body prepare to do something important. Anxiety produces a psychophysiological reaction of intense activation of the central nervous system and the whole organism. It appears when you have to act in a situation that demands intense or sustained effort and serves to activate and cope with a threat or danger that is occurring in the present or that may happen in the future.
Therefore, anxiety causes changes in different body systems (activating them) that prepare us to act and help respond quickly.
Anxiety is a normal and healthy reaction in most cases. For example, when you are facing a job interview or test it can be useful because you put on βalertβ. You may notice some physical sensations such as that the heart is going faster or having a dry mouth, which decrease during the interview or examination. Even before the interview or the exam you can notice these feelings and have some thoughts like that the interviewer can be very hard or that the questions are very difficult.
Keep in mind that anxiety is a normal emotion is an important aspect for those who have it, as the goal cannot be to eliminate it, but to learn to tolerate it and manage it
Anxiety disorders are characterized by intense fear or anxiety and/or excessive worry. These disorders cause significant discomfort and affect the normal functioning of the person of the age (whether in relation to family or friends, or performance at school or at work). Depending on what is the main focus of fear and/or concern, one disorder or another is talked about.
Separation Anxiety Disorder. In this type of disorder, the minor has an intense fear of separating themselves from the caregivers for fear that something will happen to them and never see them again. For example, when a minor gets nervous every time his mother leaves home, even if he stays with the father. He starts crying and screaming and says that something bad can happen to the mother on the street or have an accident.
Specific phobia. When a person has an intense fear of an object or situation (injections, airplane, heights, insects, etc.). If the person is deeply afraid of social situations (having a conversation, being observed or acting before other people, etc.) is called anxiety disorder (or social phobia). An example of specific phobia would be, for example, when a person is afraid of heights, becomes very nervous, trembles and notices as if he was dizzy. A case of social anxiety disorder would be when a person feels very nervous when talking to other people.
Panic Disorder. Panic attack is defined as an episode of sudden and intense anxiety that is accompanied by unpleasant physical sensations (palpitations, drowning, dizziness,..) and thoughts that are usually catastrophic (fear of losing control or dying, among others). Often, panic disorder occurs in conjunction with agoraphobia. It would be the case of a person who notices discomfort and anxiety in situations in which he thinks that one can pass out, when he goes on the metro, the bus, in central streets, with many people, forcing him not to take public transport and need to be accompanied by always.Β
