Apple trees that have been growing in our part of the world for hundreds of years are at risk of being destroyed by the climate crisis. They are suffering from rising temperatures caused by greenhouse gas emissions, reports The Guardian.
Experts point out that it no longer gets cold enough in winter. The trees normally store energy in the fall, then go into a kind of hibernation and take action again in the spring. If there are insufficient cold hours, the trees already consume their energy during the winter and have insufficient left over to bear fruit in the spring.
The native apple trees from the northwest of Europe need around a thousand cold hours. Apple trees from other parts of the world, such as New Zealand or Japan, still bear fruit when there are fewer cold hours. Source: The Guardian.
