Are there hedgehogs without spines?
Hedgehogs normally have 7 or 8 thousand spines on their backs and on the side of their bodies. The spines then have a sharp point. The spines (pens) fall out after about 1.5 years, but new spines grow on again. Each spine is hollow and is about 2cm long. Where there are no spines, the hedgehog has a fur of very stiff hairs.
Hedgehogs are insect eaters and belong to the mammals. There are about23 species hedgehogssome of which don't even have spines but hairs. These actually look like rats and arehair rules called. The other species with spines are called the spikes.
The hair rules live in Thailand and Indonesia. They used to be found in Europe, but unfortunately no longer. The great hair rule is bigger than our hedgehog, they even hunt fish. Small hair lines are smaller than our hedgehog. Hair rules have a long bald tail and they do not hibernate.

Another special spikel-hedgehog, the langoo rule does have spines, but very short! And, how could it be otherwise, he's got big, upright, long ears. The Norway rule (or the earred hedgehog) lives in the south of Russia, in Pakistan and Egypt. If he is cold, in winter, then he hibernates, but otherwise not.
