#HERFST2020 😍 Where does the word autumn come from: the #Germaanse root harbista was in Old High German herbist, in Middle High German herbest and in Old Frisian and Middle Dutch revested. Also the English word harvest (“harvest”) is related to our name for this season.
The #astronomisch certain beginning of autumn is the autumn equinox around 23 September in the northern hemisphere, and around 20 March in the southern hemisphere. The sun then passes through the autumn point and the day and night are almost the same length. Autumn ends around 22 December in the northern hemisphere, and around 21 June in the southern hemisphere, with the winter solstice.
The astronomical beginning of autumn is the benchmark of the French Republican calendar.
The #meteorologische Autumn begins earlier, on September 1 in the Northern Hemisphere and on March 1 in the Southern Hemisphere. It will then last until 30 November and 31 May respectively.
In temperate climatic zones, most deciduous trees and other plants also lose their leaves. In autumn it gets much colder than in summer, although there may be periods of heat, the so-called late summer.
