Sia Furler was born on December 18, 1975 in Adelaide, Australia. Her father is a musician and her mother is an art professor. They were both part of the band The Soda Jerx. Sia grew up in a rich artistic environment. She is also a niece of Colin Hay of Men At Work. As a child, she counted Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Sting under her early influences. Sia says she became a singer on her own when she studied in Italy when she was 17.

She stood up in a karaoke bar and took audiences to sing along with Bill Withers 'Lean On Me'. In her late teens, Sia played jazz and then triphop. She traveled with her boyfriend Dan Pontifex. When she was alone in Thailand, she was told that he had been tragically killed in a road accident in London. After her boyfriend's death, Sia settled in London. She sang a backup for Jamiroquai and recorded a solo album Healing Is Difficult and released it in 2002. The music is influenced by jazz and soul. The text covers dealing with her boyfriend's death. “Taken For Granted”, a single from the album, reached the pop -top 10 in the UK. Sia recalls the years in mourning of her boyfriend's death as very difficult and marked by extensive drug use. She remembers considering suicide and even goes as far as writing a suicide note. In 2004 she released another studio album, Color the Small One .
