Pedro Camejo died in the Battle of Carabobo on 24.6.1821.
He acted as a cavalry officer (lieutenant) of the Venezuelan army in the War of Independence. The nickname Negro Primero with which he is known, was inspired by his bravure and skill in handling the spear. He was Vicente Alonzo's slave in Apure. At the beginning of the independence gesta he was part of the realist army. In 1818, when chief general Simon Bolívar arrived in San Juan de Payara, during the course of the Center Campaign, he saw Camejo for the first time. The bravery and corpulence of the warrior, together with the references given to him by General José Antonio Páez about him, aroused the interest of the Liberator and, in a short talk they held, Bolivar asked him some questions, which were answered by Pedro Camejo with some naivety and simplicity; explaining the reasons for him led to join the ranks of the Republican army, answered sincerely that it had been out of greed; but that he later understood that the struggle had other higher purposes
