#health Bruxism consists of clenching or grinding teeth producing a characteristic and intense noise. It is usually done unconsciously.
When does it happen?
It can occur during sleep (sleep bruxism) or while the child is awake (awake bruxism)
This condition is very common in young children, but it can occur at all ages, it is more common in children with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy or with dental malocclusion.
What is the cause?
It's not clear. There are multiple factors that seem to be involved: genetic (there is usually a family history), dental factors (malocclusion), the emergence of teeth in babies, sleep disorders, emotional tension, stress or anxiety (especially in adolescents).
What symptoms does it produce?
In young children, except for annoying noise, it usually does not produce other symptoms. It usually disappears before the age of 6.
If it persists once the permanent teeth come out, it could cause pain in the temporomandibular joint, hypertrophy of the masticatory muscles, increased tooth sensitivity, headache or progressive tooth wear.
Do you need treatment?
It is advisable to go to the dentist who will evaluate the appropriate treatment if children already have permanent teeth and bruxism is persistent.
