NAME AND ORIGIN CAMASSIA
The Camassia comes with 6 species native to the mountains and prairies of the western part of North America. Indians ate the boiled bulbs, which although taste a bit like a potato, but cooked much like a rubber ball. The range of the Camassia runs from Lake Erie down to California and overlaps in the south the area of the Calochortus, which was also eaten by the Indians. The Latin name Camassia originated from the pronunciation of the Indians who called the edible bulbs quamash. In addition, the Indian word camas means fruit.
