Three lots produced in China #paracetamol contain the carcinogen PCA, discovered NRC and Zembla. The producer of the contaminated paracetamol is one of the main suppliers of a Dutch pharmaceutical company. “If paracetamol was a mint, the shelves were empty now.”

Apotex produces the (home) brands of Albert Heijn, Etos, Jumbo, Tekpleister, DA and Kruidvat. That the paracetamol is contaminated at the drugstore or the super around the corner, is not said. After all, the 36 million polluted pills can be anywhere in the world.

Carcinogen
While Anqiu Lu'an helps the world get the best paracetamol, employees of a certified laboratory in Germany open the packaging of samples from four different batches of paracetamol raw material from China. Three samples of Anqiu Lu'an, a fourth sample — for control — from a smaller Chinese producer, Hebei Jiheng Pharmaceutical.

A few weeks later, the laboratory sends the results of the analysis to the clients. The Hebei Jiheng sample shows no relevant deviations. The three samples of Anqiu Lu'an are. They contain 4-chloroaniline, abbreviated PCA. The chemical is carcinogenic and genotoxic, which can cause direct damage to human DNA.

Anqiu Lu'an thus sells paracetamol with a carcinogenic pollution. The samples come from three batches, together about 18,000 kilos. That's 36 million polluted 500-milligram pills.
