Known for its wonderful biodiversity that has been maintained over time, the Cerro Santa Ana Natural Monument, a space under protection and administered by the National Institute of Parks (Inparques), a body attached to the Ministry of People's Power for Ecosocialism (Minec), commemorates on June 14 47 years of its declaration.
It is in the center of the Paraguaná Peninsula, north of Falcon State, in the jurisdiction of the Falcón and Carirubana municipalities, with an area of 1,900 hectares and an altitude of 830 meters above sea level (masl). It stands out for being the only elevation in the whole Paraguana Peninsula, which consists of three picachos, the highest of them is Santa Ana and the other two are Buena Vista and Moruy.
The declaration of the Cerro Santa Ana Natural Monument was concreted by Decree No. 1.005, dated 14 June 1972, with the aim of preserving its particular ecosystems of green forests that contrast with the semi-desert environment that predominates in the peninsula. Subbasins are protected in its territory that supply underground aquifers, the Wildlife Reserve and Fisheries Reserve Laguna de Boca de Caño.
In Cerro Santa Ana there are several types of vegetation depending on the altitudinal floors as in the xerophytic zone with spinar forest, troophytic with montane deciduous forest, mesothermic hydrophytic with cloud forest, antillean scrub area and pseudoparamera vegetation area.
The flora on the hill is varied, with yaques and cujíes in the sedimentary zone, the high-rise cactus in the arid zone, as well as ceiba, orange trees and cedar, whose presence is determined by the different biotic floors that characterize this natural paradise.
To the south of the hill is born a spring that runs through a ravine covered with lush vegetation. In the cloud forest you get lush species made up of beautiful orchids and ferns. The most spectacular is the view from the top of the mountain, where you can see the Sierra de San Luis and Médanos de Coro national parks, and north to the island of Aruba.
Cerro Santa Ana has a fauna represented by avifauna, finding species such as guacharaca, cardinal coriano, bobito copetón, mountain paraulata and warbler. Also, mammals such as casiragua, picure, ounce, cunaguaro, mountain rabbit and species endemic or typical of this ecosystem are observed, such as blue tarantula.
It should be noted that this space is a source of the natural resources of the region, while also being an area conducive to hiking and nature tourism for which you can count on park rangers trained in training and ecological guides
