For the suffocation of 900 pigs by ignoring the alarm of the failing ventilation three times, not only is a pig farmer from the Achterhoek Meddo not punish, the Dutch food and commodity authority NVWA did not even allow a criminal investigation to be carried out. This is evidenced by the report that Animal Rights received a WOB request after a year of insistence.

Thursday morning 20 June 2019 the police found over 900 dead pigs on several piles outside a barn on the Goorweg in Winterswijk. 1 If it turns out that the animals are most likely suffocated due to the failure of the air system in the barn, the police will pull and the NVWA takes over the investigation. 2 The animals were culled later that day even before the NVWA inspector arrives. “A strange course of events,” says Animal Rights campaign leader Erwin Vermeulen. “The victims of the disaster were destroyed before the investigation began.”
