#history At a height of approximately 2,310 feet above the city of Rio de Janeiro, the statue of Christ the Redeemer has been a source of fascination for experts and historians for nearly a hundred years.

It is the fourth largest statue of Jesus Christ in the world, the largest Art Deco sculpture in the entire planet and as if that weren't enough, in 2007 it was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World next to Machu Picchu, the Great Wall of China and the Roman Coliseum.

Located atop Mount Corcovado in Rio, the statue has an impressive height of 98 feet (or 30 meters), two thirds the height of the Statue of Liberty in New York, and its extended arms reach up to 92 feet (or 28 meters) in a horizontal direction.

In addition to being one of the characteristic and most famous tourist sites in the city of Rio de Janeiro, this statue has also become an icon of Brazilian culture. More importantly, the statue has become a global symbol of Christianity, which every year draws millions of believers and non-believers to the top of Corcovado Mountain. The idea of designing a huge statue of Jesus Christ first came about in the 1850s, when a local priest raised the possibility of building a Christian monument on top of Corcovado Mountain. Apparently, he had lost the then Princess Isabel (daughter of Emperor Pedro II and Priesa Regent of Brazil at the time) to finance the project, but the idea was discarded after the Declaration of the Republic in Brazil in 1889, a political movement that led to the separation of the Catholic Church and the State.
