#history By the year 30 the Romans worshiped several gods that came from the religion of the Greeks. Tradition allowed people to follow any god according to their own will. As a result of this religious freedom, multiple sects and beliefs had flourished throughout the Roman Empire.


It was in this environment that a new religious behavior emerged. At first the Romans thought that it was just one more Jewish sect, since there were several of them in their territory. This group of Jews was following the teachings of a leader named Jesus. Little by little, this movement gained followers who were not Jews, and so it became clear that it was a new religion. This new cult would be known as Christianity.

Jesus was considered the son of the only God whom the Jews worshiped. Judaism awaited the arrival of the Messiah, a man who would be filled with the spirit of God, and it was Jesus who occupied this place for those who chose Christianity.

In the Roman Empire, the first Christians were heavily persecuted because of their faith. The punishments were varied and in some cases led to death. However, Christianity continued to spread for some 300 years.

The persecution ended in the fourth century, when religion was legalized by Constantine I, who had become a Christian before taking over as emperor. As ruler, Constantine offered protection to Christians and allowed them to build churches throughout the Empire. Later, in 380, Roman Emperor Theodosius declared Catholic Christianity to be the official religion of the Roman Empire and banned all other religious practices.
