A historic event took place on Christmas in 1914,
during World War I, an unofficial ceasefire series that spread to the western front on Christmas that year.
French, German and British soldiers came together and crossed enemy trenches to exchange seasonal greetings and conversations, there was exchange of food, souvenirs, joint funeral ceremonies, exchange of prisoners, carol songs and even football matches were played between the sides.
These Christmas truces were important because of the number of men involved and the high level of participation, it was often seen as a symbol of peace and humanity amid one of the most violent wars in history.
Approximately 100,000 French and German soldiers joined the informal cessation of hostilities along the entire western front.
Unfortunately, in the following years, 1915 and 1916, the soldiers were no longer so willing to the truce, much had passed in the war, thanks to the devastating losses during the Battle of Somme and Verdun, and the use of poisonous gas.
