Everything has been said about humor, Bergson has talked about it, Pirandello has called it "the opposite feeling", but, perhaps, the fact that laughter changes with the times has not been stressed enough. What made us giggle years ago no longer amuses us now. I remember, just a couple of decades ago, the big laughs we had with the Panariello and Fiorello shows. It seems like yesterday, but it has already been almost twenty years. I remember some catchphrases that, probably, on today's public would not have taken hold while we were all laughing then, me, my husband, my friends.
And, if I go back in time, I remember some cornerstones of comedy always recalled in the family, which made me, my father, my mother and my grandmother laugh out loud. One was a film with Alberto Sordi, whose title I don't know, in which he found himself catapulted into a comic espionage intrigue. The other is "The Ugly Dachshund", a 66th Disney film directed by Norman Tokar. We all went to see the adventures of the poor Great Dane who is making trouble convinced he is a dachshund, and we laughed out loud.
But, above all, the undying myth of home comedy was "The Long, Long Trailer", a 54th film directed by Vincent Minnelli, with the irresistible scene of the new bride trying to cook for her hubby, while the big caravan is on the move.
It was a whole era to have different, more naive tastes and thresholds of humor. What was released then, now makes you smile. However, the films of those times there (fifty / sixty), still possessed an allure, a sophisticated charm that makes them immortal. Great directors such as Minnelli, or Victor Fleming, with a close-up, with a fade, with a simple background sound conveyed pathos, emotion, tragedy, eros, much better than the explicit, articulated and often unnecessarily cruel scenes of today.
