#climatechange . Production and consumption of food must change to control climate change. To curb climate change and ensure sufficient food production, the world needs to radically change food production and consumption and land use. To limit global warming, only reducing emissions from industry and traffic is not enough.

This is the conclusion of a report published on Thursday by the IPCC, the United Nations Scientific Climate Office. Agriculture, forestry and other land use cause a quarter of all greenhouse gases. Half of all methane emissions worldwide come from meadows and rice fields. Furthermore, deforestation and the disappearance of peatlands lead to more emissions, according to the IPCC. Three-quarters of the ice-free land is manmade. Meanwhile, a quarter of it has been degraded, partly due to soil erosion. With an unchanged approach, food production could be in trouble after 2050. There is a vicious circle: not only does the way people use land ignite climate change, that climate change also affects the soil itself.

Climate change: food production needs to change radically.
