Connection between Language and Cerebellum
The main functions of the cerebellum:
The cerebellum has many functions relating to motor functions such as maintaining balance, coordinating movement, motor learning, and vision.
The cerebellum also has many connections to several parts of the brain in order to coordinate language - such as the Broca’s area and the prefrontal cortex
How does the cerebellum contribute to language understanding?
There are two distinct cerebellar areas that contribute to developing and understanding language:
The superior areas of the cerebellum - responds to the motor aspects of speech (controlling the lips and the tongue)
The right posterolateral cerebellum - responsible for semantic tasks in the core language network
The cerebellum is responsible in determining verbal fluency, grammar processing, identifying and correcting language errors, as well as written speech.
The cerebellum has many connections with the working memory, which is consistently used during language comprehension
Damage to cerebellum and its effects on language:
Patients with cerebellar lesions can handle problems with lexical access, however will encounter problems regarding their syntax and speech production.
Children with cerebellar tumours can develop learning complications, as damage to the right cerebellum has been associated with verbal and literacy difficulties
Ataxic dysarthria is caused by damage to the cerebellum, and is involved in irregular articulatory errors, equal and excessive stress on syllables, and inappropriate variation of pitch and loudness
