May is one of the best months of the year; The weather is warm, the flowers are blooming and summer is near - and in the middle of May one of the brightest and happiest holidays is celebrated by a loving group of people who love color, song and dance and good food. The month of May has Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican national holiday celebrating Mexico's victory over the French in Puebla in 1862.

Think of the sounds of mariachi bands, the delightful echo of children's laughter, colorful costumes and the delicious aroma of delicious food. Now you have moved on with your idea and entered the Cinco de Mayo festival. On the 5th of May the celebrations will be held all over Mexico and for those of us who are lucky enough to be there, it will be an exciting time. However, those of us who are at home in Southern California and other border states do not need to feel left out, as there will be many ongoing celebrations in these areas.

If you are in the Los Angeles area, the most obvious place to find the Cinco de Mayo Festival will be on Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles. Olvera Road crosses the road from Union Station and is easily accessible by car or by subway from the Valley area. Olvera Street has many colorful gift shops from Mexico as well as exciting restaurants. During Cinco de Mayo there will be song and dance and food. There will be artists who will be showcasing their handicrafts, mariachi bands and Aztec and Spanish dancers. Olvera Street is part of La Puebla de Los Angeles State Historic Park, which is part of the first part of the City of Angels. Similar festivals will take place in various locations including the Border States of Arizona and Texas as well as in the City of Chicago and Denver. For those who prefer to have their own celebrations at home, Cinco de Mayo is an excellent excuse for having a party as Mexican food lends itself easily to entertainment. Mexican authentic cooking is very different from Mexican and American cuisine that was often served in many American restaurants.
