#nature #fungi This species of fungus belongs to the Hymenochaetaceae family and grows out the side of black locust, Carya, Oak and Acacia trees. It forms a semi circular disc shape and varies in colour from a yellowish brown to brownish black colour as it matures. As the name indicates, the cap of the fungus will begin to crack with maturity. Edibilty: This fungus is not considered edible due to the mature cap being very hard and wood like in texture, and contaminants within its environment could possibly be toxic. Habitat: The cracked cap polypore can be found growing in any areas that have black locust and Acacia trees, including lawns, yards, roadsides, and even urban areas. They can appear on both living and decaying wood and can reach up to 40cm across, sometimes growing in a kidney shape.
