It was created by Jeff Davis and is produced by Mark Gordon Company in partnership with CBS Television Studios and ABC Studios. The series follows the investigative life of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit in Quantico, Virginia.

The unit itself is based entirely on the real-life BAU built by FBI profiler John Douglas. The former protagonist of the series, Jason Gideon, and the current protagonist, David Rossi, are partly based on John Douglas himself, as far as different aspects of their personalities are concerned. The series abandons the usual format of procedural dramas by focusing more on criminals and their victims than on the main cast.

Throughout the episodes, the cast often recites quotes from famous philosophers. These quotes are relevant to the plot of the episode and help to put together the “pieces” of the case. Previously, it was always Jason Gideon who recited them, but, since his departure, the rest of the cast has taken over; quotes are mainly quoted by the featured character of that episode.

It's a series based on an elite squad of FBI profilers who analyze the nation's most twisted criminal minds, anticipating future attacks by perpetrators before they can strike again.

Each member of the “mind hunter” team uses their own experience to identify the motivations of the assailants and identify the emotional circumstances that trigger their actions in order to stop them.

This American crime drama series on the CBS network. The series premiered on September 22, 2005 and ended on February 19, 2020 with a total of 324 episodes spanning fifteen seasons. The series has been revived and renewed for its sixteenth season at the end of February.
