History of cycling: origin and evolution
Cycling is a sport modality, which has millions of practitioners and followers around the world, but this sport has not always been as we know it today. In we tell you the history and origin of cycling and how its evolution has been.
Origin of cycling
The first cycling races are born very soon. Even without pedals, races are held with the velocipede. When the pedals are added to the huge front wheel, they are regularized.
On May 31, 1868, the first documented bicycle race in the world is held, in the Saint Claud Park in Paris (France), over a short distance of 1,200 meters on a gravel floor intended for horse racing.
when is cycling born
This first cycling race in history, which consists of two races, is won by the Englishman James Moore (1849-1935), followed by a certain Polocini. The Touring Club of France has placed a plaque in this park where you can read: “On May 31, 1868, James Moore becomes the winner of the first race for velocipeds in France”.
In 1869, the first classic race was held between Paris and Rouen, won, of course, by James Moore, who invested just over ten hours. Of the hundred participants, five were women. In 1876, an Englishman named Dodds sets the first record for the hour at 256 kilometers.
when was the first cycling race held
In 1885, the Englishman Renold invented the chain, and the traction was transferred to the rear wheel. Even before the existence of tires, the first bicycle endurance tests begin to be held in the Midwest of the United States.
Starting in 1886, the towns of Saint Paul and Minneapolis celebrate the Six-Day Bicycle Race, and after the addition of tires to the wheels, it is also convened by Madison Square Garden in New York.
The first of these tests, held in 1886 in Saint Paul, was won by Albert Schoclt, who travels about 1,500 km in the six days.
In 1890, Dunlop invented tubed tires and as soon as they are added to bikes, distances multiply; Schock himself won at Madison in New York in 1893, covering more than 2,500 km on the same days.
In Europe, the public would not accept such harshness and the first six-day test was held in Berlin in 1909, but in relay pairs.
After cycling entered the Olympic Games with the Road Cross Country event in 1896. The first modern classic race is the Bordeaux-Paris race, held in 1891 and won by the Englishman G. P.
