Cycling in Luxor was not recommended because it would be unsafe. After a day of walking we noticed that the traffic was not such a choas as we were told and we decided to rent bicycles. We rented two mountain bikes that were neatly adjusted to our height. The next day we went out early with our bikes. First explore Luxor and then the crossing by boat over the Nile to the Valley of the Kings.
The boat for tourists we were not allowed on with our bikes we were referred to the local boat. For us very nice because we prefer to sit among the people of the country. Not a luxury tourist boat but a boat with wooden benches. The locals came back from the market and we could just there at the benches were full and we looked for a slice on the ground.
Across the street, our bikes were lifted out of the boat and put on shore. Our yet could begin.
The first part went fine, we cycle through clay villages and excavations. We stopped on the way for some food and drinks and took pictures. Then towards the Valley of the Kings. I thought very naively that the graves were in a valley, the word valley says enough. I didn't know that the valley was behind a mountain and that we had to cycle over that mountain to get into the valley. What was it hard on those actually too small rotten bikes. I was riding up front and suddenly I heard a car next to me with a big roof rack on its roof.. The driver pointed on my bike and to his roof. I immediately understood him and nodded yes before consulting my husband. I didn't care at all how expensive this ride was going to be. After consultation we could go to the valley for little money with the bikes on the roof. The driver waited for us at the graves and drove us back a bit until the road was passable for us again.
Once we went down to the Nile, we bought two oranges and ate them on the edge of the Nile. There was a young boy sitting next to me and I asked him if he wanted a piece of. Yeah, he wanted to.. Then we were invited to his home for tea and after tea he took us with his boat (yes yes yes a real tourist boat) free to the other side sailed.
A nice adventure again on a day that always goes differently than we plan. (well, we don't really do plans we see and that makes travel so much fun for us)
