What is parental alienation?

Parental alienation is about the process in which children are set up against (one of) the parents. Often this happens after a divorce by the other parent, sometimes grandparents or other family also play a role in this. That is very harmful to the development of the child, can give problems of adhesion. This obviously puts the whole family situation out of balance.

on 25 April is the international day on which Parental alienation is addressed. This day has been organized since 2006.

On the site of Knowledge Centre parental alienation is described that parental alienation can lead to parental rejection. Then a child, for no apparent reason, does not want to see one of the parents anymore.

In the Netherlands, some 16,000 children lose contact with one of the parents temporarily or for a long (re) time each year. Parental rejection is a form of child abuse and has serious consequences for the further development of the child.
