Deze aartshertog werd smoorverliefd op Maria, die de officiële erfgenaam van het land van zijn vader was en honderden vrijers had die bij zijn rang pasten. Op zoek om haar te veroveren, bestelde hij een buitengewone en unieke ring voor haar te maken.
De traditie van de verlovingsring komt uit het oude Egypte, waar toekomstige bruiden het om hun linkerringvinger droegen, aangezien er de amoris-ader is, die niets meer is dan een ader die die vinger met het hart verbindt.
