Surely this is one of , if not the most striking vinyl album I have come across in the hiphop genre. A colourful album this De La Soul LP with the main colour yellow. The very best thing is if you have this album in the original colour yellow in your collection. The albums that are subsequent reissues have a slightly different shade of yellow. I hadn't bought this album before, but I did buy the CD. But I still wanted this album on vinyl, but not a reissue , but the original version from 1989. Really easy to find them. The album is very sought-after for collectors. I had been searching for a while, but had also kind of let it slip that I would find the album quickly. And then, just when you stop thinking about it, it happens to you that you suddenly find this 1989 album.

It was a beautiful summer day and in a village in Overijssel there was a vinyl fair in the local library and clubhouse. I was in doubt that morning whether I wanted to go. Still, I decided to take a look, after all, you never know. In hindsight, this was my best morning ever! Inside, there were a number of stands selling all kinds of vinyl music, mainly Dutch-language albums, 80s compilation albums. Not really exciting yet was my first impression, until I got to a stand where there was already some more great stuff. I started looking through the bins and suddenly I saw De La Soul 3 Feet High and Rising vinyl, original 1989 version. Turned out to be a first pressing. Hardly played at all. What a purchase! I didn't have to think long about whether I wanted to buy this album. Full of pride, I bought it and since then it has been showing off among my collection. My lesson that morning was: Never think I won't come across it anyway, because you never know! This album from this hip-hop period was slightly different from the other hip-hop of the time. De La Soul had something funny, something light-hearted that put a smile on your face.

De La Soul members

The group De La Soul consists of three band members Kelvin Melcer, David Jude Jolicoeur and Vincent Mason.

Kelvin Melcer

He is a rapper and producer. He grew up in New York with David Jude Jolicoeur whom he hung out with during his childhood years. When they went to High School together, they met third band member Vincent Mason. By then, they were already into music. Their preference was jazz rap. Melcer got his love for jazz from his father who was a huge jazz fan. Melcer is very talented and is one of the most underrated MCs we know. Kelvin Melcer has the nicknames Posdnuos, Pos and Plug One which later evolved into Plug Won ( Plug Wonder Why ) During their school days, Melcer was a DJ at school and carried the nickname 'Sound' This name is incorporated into the nickname Posdnuos. Plug One was a nickname originally created from a concept for the album 3 Feet High and Rising, where the idea was that the music would come from Mars and the three rappers were plugged in with each having their own microphone jack. Melcer was given Plug One. The concept was ultimately not used, but the nickname remained. Collaborations with other rappers and hip-hop artists also earned him the following nicknames: Mercenary given by DCQ P-Pain given by rapper T-Pain. P-Pain was a caricature he used in DOOM's song Supervillainz.

David Jude Jolicoeur

David Jude Jolicoeur goes by the nicknames Trugoy the Dove and Plug Two and Dave. If you turn the word trugoy around, it says yoghurt. David likes to eat yoghurt and that is why he has this nickname. The nickname Trugoy the Dove is also called Dove or Dove Love. Plug Two refers to the concept of the album 3 Feet High and Rising in which David was plugged in second with a microphone. As mentioned earlier, the concept was abandoned, but he kept the nickname Plug Two. Dave is a nickname for his first name David. He is also called JD Dove by Posdnuos in one of De La Soul's songs, namely Stakes is High. David Jude Jolicoeur also stood out for his dress sense and hairstyle. For instance, he wore dreadlocks of different lengths and necklaces with peacock signs. He was subsequently criticised for projecting a "hippy image" with the group De La Soul. Also considering the peacock sign and flower image on the album which was labelled flower power by critics, while at the same time the album was very well received. It became their best album. He was also recognised for his rap in rapper Gorillaz's song Feel Good Inc. David raps the second verse of this song.
