De Venezolaanse Turpial

Op 23 mei 1958 verklaarde de Venezolaanse Vereniging van Wetenschappen, bestaande uit wetenschappers en natuuronderzoekers, de Turpial, Ave Nacional de Venezuela, In Venezuela is er de waterturpial, de boomgaarden turpial, zeer overvloedig in de regio van het Maracaibomeer; de geelstaartturpial, de Baltimore turpial, die bezoekt de Zulia in de dorre zone van Maracaibo. La Guajira in de winter boreaal, en de gewone turpial, dat is de nationale vogel.

De Turpial is aanwezig op bijna het hele nationale grondgebied en voedt zich met insecten, fruit, eieren en zelfs kleinere vogels. Het is een territoriale vogel wiens wetenschappelijke naam Icterus Icterus is, die meestal verlaten nesten bezet en het broedseizoen is tussen maart en september. Deze zangvogel onderscheidt zich door een zwart verenkleed op zijn hoofd, borst en vleugels, de rest van het lichaam is een aardse gele, bijna oranje, versierd met een dunne lijn wit op zijn vleugels. De snavel is coniform en de soort is tussen de 15 en 22 centimeter hoog.
