Egels met houten stekels


Wat jammer, dat je echte egeltjes niet als huisdier mag houden! Dat is natuurlijk te begrijpen, want het zijn namelijk beschermde dieren, ze horen echt in de natuur thuis. Helaas worden ze bedreigd door de mensheid, namelijk door het verkeer, land- en tuinbouwgif, maar ook door de vos. We moeten dus zuinig zijn op onze egeltjes!  

Wist jij trouwens, dat een echte egel ongeveer 6000 stekels op zijn rug heeft? Deze geknutselde egels hebben "maar" 200 houten cocktailprikkertjes als stekels, ingeprikt op een half styropor (piepschuim of polystyreen) ei. Natuurlijk is het halve ei eerst geverfd met bruine acrylverf, daarna kan je de stokjes er in rijen inprikken. Een makkelijk klusje, maar niet voor de allerkleinste kinderen.

Echte egels zijn insecteneters, maar ze eten eigenlijk ook van alles, wat ze tegenkomen. Bijvoorbeeld slakjes, wormpjes, kikkers, hagedissen, mollen, jonge muizen, vruchten en paddestoelen. Dat vind ik best verrassend! En het grappige is, als ze 's nachts eten, dan maken ze best veel lawaai! Ze kunnen aardig hard makken, snuffelen luid en proesten. Ze hebben dus niet echt tafelmanieren!
