Depression in the child does not at all resemble
the adult. It's a serious disorder. It may be related to a
learnings. This disease can manifest itself as early as kindergarten.
Warning Signs
- Frequent motor hyperactivity phases with endangering:
climb while
top of trees, walk on roofs, cross the street without looking, falls with
Injuries... provocations and fights.
- Rare and discrete abatement phases:
crying that begin and end
brutally, for no obvious reason. Multiple complaints, sense of misunderstanding,
discouragement, irritability, whispered voice.
- Concentration disorders:
even with goodwill, the child does not arrive
more to concentrate as long as before: he can learn only the three
first lines of recitation. The child quickly gives up, at the slightest difficulty. It
destroys his equipment, deteriorates his affairs, spoils his achievements, even self-mutilating.
- Somatic complaints (stomach ache, headache, fatigue, repeated absences).
Who to turn to?
Ask for help from the school psychologist and/or the School Health Service who will partner for
refer to a diagnosis (is depression the cause or consequence of another disorder
instrumental, emotional, traumatic,...?).
Educational Advice
- Do not expect a miracle of medical care: treatment
Medication is usually introduced only in adolescence.
- Do not wait for the child to get better of himself before setting up
strategies.
- Seek the help of the school psychologist for educational facilities.
What to do
- Reassure the child about his abilities, to value his successes.
- Do not dramatize his failures
- Take into account its difficulties, including relational
- When endangered or assaulted, do not scream, but remind him of the rules
and confirm that he is able to respect them
- Promote art (music, painting) and creation to enable other means
of expression of suffering
- Accepting or tolerating the isolation of the child
