Did You Know That There Is A Relationship... Z

Did You Know That There Is A Relationship Between The Subconscious & Our Habits?

This has been shown by studies by psychologists at Yale and Stanford University

Our mind is a wonderful space that goes beyond what we think, especially when it comes to the subconscious. The subconscious refers to mental processes that are below the threshold of consciousness, that is, that is not perceived by the individual, but that can emerge in certain situations and influence their way of acting or their character.

This means that, although we do not realize it, our subconscious influences most of the decisions we make or actions we carry out every day. Actions as simple as getting dressed, driving, or playing sports are examples of activities that we do but we are not fully aware of why or why we do them in a certain way.

Our subconscious controls up to 90% of our brain. In fact, the subconscious is continually sending messages to our conscious part. Therefore, on many occasions, we behave in a certain way without having a coherent explanation. This has been shown by different studies by psychologists from Yale University and psychologists from Stanford University.

Yale University Experiment

To study the subconscious and our behavior, Yale psychologists tried to influence the judgment of some people by making them hold a cup of coffee, which could be hot or cold. How could this work? Well, when some persons were performing the experiment on entering a room, they found another individual laden with books, documents, and a cup of coffee.

What this individual did was ask them to hold the cup for a few seconds. When the participants were asked to judge this stranger, who kept the cup of coffee cold, they agreed to describe him as distant and selfish. On the contrary, those who held the cup of hot coffee affirmed that it was a nice person.

This simple experiment shows that what happens outside and the stimuli that reach us unconsciously influence our behaviors and evaluations.

Stanford University Experiment

For their experiment, psychologists at Stanford University brought together a group of people to play an economic investment game. Some were seated at completely empty tables, and on the tables of others, there was a black folder. This simple item showed that those exposed to the black folder were more competitive and had higher earnings expectations.

Again, it is shown that we are continually exposed to receive stimuli that we do not process consciously, but that our subconscious does process.

This would explain that our daily decisions, without realizing it, are influenced by the stimuli that the subconscious processes. In many cases, our conscious and unconscious minds are on the same line and fulfill our desires, but other times they don't, which is why it is said to "sabotage" us.

How To Connect With Our Subconscious?

Through hypnosis, we can change these repetitive habits. This does not mean that we can have absolute control of our subconscious, but we can establish communication with it. By going deeply into a state of relaxation, we can reprogram the subconscious and accept or reject certain thoughts or perceptions.

At what age does the cognitive deterioration of your brain begin? According to a scientific study published in the 'British Medical Journal', our brain could lose cognitive abilities such as memory or reasoning over the years. In this section, I tell you from what age it usually occurs and how to stop this mental detriment.

We usually do not give enough importance to our mental health. Cognitive abilities such as intellect or learning are basic for our development. However, its deterioration worsens over the years. Taking care of our mental health is the most effective prevention method against other pathologies in our bodies. The fact of suffering from anxiety or stress is strongly linked to suffering from more severe mental health problems in the long run.

Anxiety

This response of the body to the fears and concerns of everyday life sometimes causes us to have an excessive impact. A large number of nerve endings participate in the production of anxiety, which causes people with this condition to feel any stimulus as a threatening cause.
In the long run, this means that our cognitive abilities are diminished since our mind is not paying them as much attention as it should. The great influence of suffering from anxiety is reflected in memory loss, diminishing attention, and promoting the early onset of dementia.

Stress

Another disorder that weakens our cognitive functions is stress. Whether your diagnosis is mild or chronic, this nervousness can cause our psychic functions to be seriously affected. However, there are studies that support that mild or moderate stress can positively influence our performance. For example, when taking an exam, it is possible that the stress generated by the test itself increases our abilities.
On the other hand, an alteration of these levels can cause great risks in cognitive performance. Some of the functions that can be affected for this reason are attention, learning, memory, decision-making, and reasoning.

Other Causes Of Cognitive Decline

Psychological changes are one of the most important causes when our brain loses functions. However, there are also other causes such as changes in social relationships or changes in the body itself. The human being is a social being that needs to relate to its total adaptation, so not having contact with other people can act as a trigger for mental deterioration. Likewise, loss of vision or hearing can also negatively influence our cognitive abilities to be limited.

At What Age Does The Loss Of Mental Abilities Begin and How Can We Reverse Them?

As much as we now consider that today's 50s are the 30s of before, and that, today, many people are in top shape at 70, time passes and we cannot avoid it. Aging is a natural process in which the body undergoes physiological changes that are not indicative of any disease, but that alter certain neurological functions.

Of course, the elixir of eternal youth does not exist, but slowing down old age is possible, and, if luck and genetics are on our side, you don't have to cross seven seas to achieve it. That valuable potion is in an exclusive place inside our heads. With a weight of almost 1.5 kilos, the brain contains some 86,000 million neurons that establish extraordinary wiring with each other whose maintenance depends, in large part, on our lifestyle.

But at what age does our mental detriment start? Memory and other cognitive functions of our brain, such as reasoning or understanding, could begin to deteriorate earlier than previously thought, at 45 years of age, according to the British Medical Journal. The authors of the study consider that the fact that cognitive deterioration begins before the age of 60 shows how important it is to promote the adoption of a healthy lifestyle and pay special attention to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases since studies in this regard show that heart health is directly related to brain health.

So, how can we increase our brainpower?

- Do exercise
It is true, our brain grows as we exercise. Having better cardiovascular health also means that you carry more oxygen and eliminate toxins.

- Memorize on the move
This is a technique backed by research and widely recognized by actors. If you try to memorize words and try to learn something while moving, the information is more likely to stick with you.

- Eat the right foods
About 20% of your body's sugar and energy intake goes directly to the brain, making brain function dependent on glucose levels. If your blood sugar levels are not controlled, your mind can feel much more confused. Eating foods you like releases the chemical dopamine in the brain's reward system, so you feel pleasure when you eat them.

- Disconnect and escape
Having some stress is always necessary because it helps us to respond quickly in an emergency: it helps to produce cortisol, a hormone that gives us energy in a short period of time and helps us focus. But prolonged anxiety and high levels of uncomfortable stress are quite toxic to the brain. That is why it is key that we learn to disconnect from time to time, to allow that part of the brain to rest. By unplugging, you are actually exercising a different part of the brain.

- Look for new challenges
A good way to boost your brain is to challenge it... learn something new. Activities like participating in an art class or learning a new language increase the elasticity of your brain.

- Study... and sleep
If you study something new during the day, a connection is formed in your brain between one nerve cell and another. When you sleep, that connection is strengthened and what you have learned becomes a memory. That is why sleep is a very important factor for memory.
