Lokale bewoners klagen dat de dromedarissen verwoestingen aanrichten in hun zoektocht naar water. Een ander excuus is dat de dieren te veel methaan uitstoten, zo’n één ton kooldioxide per jaar, volgens The Australian. Het ministerie van Milieu en Water in Zuid-Australië zei dat het toenemende aantal dromedarissen verschillende problemen in de regio veroorzaakt. Veel waterbronnen zijn daarbij besmet door karkassen.
