Discover: the goldfish

You probably know the goldfish from the carnival, the aquarium and the pond. Originating from China, this freshwater fish was imported into Europe only at the beginning of the 18th century. There are many different, both in shape (length of fins, bump of the head, protruding eyes, bumpy body) and in color (yellow, orange, red, spotted, black). It was first grown around 700 BC. In the 16th century, the Japanese changed the appearance of these fish by repeated selection. This creates “monstrous” shapes such as the veil tail, the telescope or the lion's head.

The goldfish is a peaceful animal that can easily coexist with other fish or water snails. If you want to see the eggs hatching, you better separate them from the adult animals, because they don't hesitate to eat their own eggs. You can easily keep a goldfish in an aquarium or a small pond in the garden. It is a very strong fish that does not suffer from large temperature fluctuations. In the wild nature he lives in vegetative water areas and in lakes.

The goldfish is an omnivorous and a he eats both small insects and plants. He is often eaten by other fish. His behavior is peaceful and he easily tolerates other fish. This fish is not protected. It is between 10 and 30 cm long. In summer he shoots calf among the aquatic plants. The female can lay up to 3,000 eggs, which stick to the plants until the small fish hatch. The eggs are transparent and have a diameter of 1 mm. After about a week they come out.
