"Hello? Earth to Destiny?"
Riley Matthews was frantically waving her hand in front of Destiny Hartwell's face, not understanding why was her friend not moving from her place. People were starting to stare. And states were something both Destiny and Riley hated.
"Keith," Destiny whispered, her lips forming an unbelievable smile. Was he really there or was she just imagining things, making a fool out of herself?
The gang shared looks between each other. Who was Keith? They wondered. Was Destiny hallucinating? What was going on?
They slowly turned around to where their friend was looking. There stood the mysterious Keith in all his glory. He was an African American lad, aged around nineteen, with short curly hair and small brown eyes.
When he looked up from his notebook, he seemed to have recognized her, because he stood up, beamed at her with his charming smile and approached to hug her. So many memories came back to Destiny, when they embraced in front of everyone's prying eyes. Even Topanga and Katy Hart thought Keith and Destiny would be a lovely couple. Little did they know they had already been one.
The world around Keith and Destiny seemed to have gotten lost. They hadn't seen each other in months, ever since she had left Maryland with her father.
"Guys, this is Keith, my ex-boyfriend," she introduced him rather calmly, unexpectedly. Most people would avoid talking about their previous relationships, but she and Keith appeared to be still holding friendly feelings.
Lucas didn't seem impressed by Destiny's ex, while the girls were admiring him. What was there to admire? It was not like any of them had a chance with him. He was probably more into girls his age. That had been clearly one of the reasons why he had broken up with Destiny.
"Uhh," he awkwardly scratched his neck, earning a raised eyebrow from Destiny, who had never seen him nervous. "We need to talk alone, if you don't mind."
She was fine with that, leading him outside in the front garden of the bakery, hoping they would clear things up. But he kept quiet for a while and when he spoke, interrupting the silence, that would have otherwise become awkward, he said something that could possibly earn him a good old beating. "I saw you at the park one night, you know. With that boy."
No.
No way.
Him?!
"That was you?!", Destiny screeched, maybe a little bit too loudly. Some heads had turned in their direction, hungry for a little bit of gossiping with their tea and coffee.
"I didn't mean to!", he held up his hands in defense, waiting for her to calm herself down. "I just wanted to congratulate you," he spoke sincerely. "I'm really happy for you."
Destiny felt bad for almost wanting to attack him for pretty much invading her privacy. It seemed like he only had good intentions.
"That was what I wanted you to have - happiness," he went on. "That's why I thought it was best if we broke up."
That was when Destiny realized that sometimes people separated to find joy and harmony elsewhere. Another lesson learned in New York.
And just like their breakup, their encounter ended with a hug.
