Dokładnie 20 lat temu, współdzielony kwartet ze Szwecji o nazwie Ace of Base wydał „The Sign', czwarty singiel ich multiplatynowego debiutanckiego albumu. Zajęło Amerykanom kilka miesięcy, aby otworzyć oczy i zobaczyć sam znak, piosenka nie utrzymywała list przebojów aż do następnego roku, kiedy został wydany w Stanach Zjednoczonych, ale piosenka stała się najbardziej trwałym dziedzictwem zespołu i pozostaje przekonującym dowodem na to, że Szwedzi są świetni w pisaniu chwytliwe piosenki pop. 

Muzyka szwedzka

Od Abby po Icona Pop, od Roxette do Robyn, Szwecja jest znana z przewagi pop od dziesięcioleci i nadal trwa. Ale przybycie Ace of Base pomogło zapoczątkować Szwedzki Miracle Muzyczny, okres od około 1990 do 2003 roku, kiedy szwedzki eksport muzyczny był na szczycie. W sprawozdaniu szwedzkiego Ministerstwa Finansów z 1999 r. stwierdzono, że opłaty licencyjne na rzecz Szwecji z rynków zagranicznych były dwukrotnie wyższe niż Stany Zjednoczone na mieszkańca. Dzisiaj Szwecja jest trzecim co do wielkości eksporterem muzycznym na świecie, stojącym za Stanami Zjednoczonymi i Zjednoczonym Królestwem. Co tłumaczy ten cud?
